What to Look for in an Online Quran Tutor: A Parent's Checklist

Choosing who teaches your child — or you — the Quran online is not a small decision. Unlike a one-off tutoring subject, a Quran tutor shapes years of a student's relationship with the deen. Before you commit to any academy, here is a practical, honest checklist of what actually matters.

1. Check the Tutor's Actual Credentials, Not Just the Word "Certified"

Almost every academy online says its teachers are "certified." That word alone tells you very little. What you should actually ask is: certified by whom, and in what?

The strongest credential in Quran teaching is Ijazah — a formal authorization to teach Quran recitation, passed down through an unbroken chain of teachers tracing back through the centuries. A tutor with Ijazah didn't just pass a company's internal test; they were personally certified by a qualified scholar after demonstrating mastery.

Beyond Ijazah, ask what broader Islamic education the teacher has. In the South Asian tradition, this is often Dars-e-Nizami — an eight-year structured curriculum covering Quran, Hadith, Fiqh, Arabic, and Tafseer, after which a graduate is formally titled an Aalim (Islamic scholar). In the Arab world, the equivalent is often study at Al-Azhar or a similar institution. Either is a meaningful credential — a vague "certified tutor" badge with no explanation of what the certification actually involved is not.

2. One-on-One vs. Group Classes

Group classes are cheaper, and that is their main advantage. In a group setting, a teacher's attention is necessarily divided, mistakes in pronunciation (Tajweed errors, Makharij issues) are harder to catch individually, and shy students — especially children — often stay quiet rather than participate. One-on-one classes cost more per seat but mean every minute of the class is about your progress specifically, and Tajweed corrections happen in real time, not batched for a group.

Neither format is objectively "wrong," but be clear about which one you are actually paying for before you enroll.

3. What a Real Free Trial Should Include

Almost every academy now offers a free trial — it is table stakes, not a differentiator. What matters is what happens during that trial. A meaningful trial should let you:

  • Meet the actual tutor who would teach ongoing classes — not a generic "sales" teacher used only for trials
  • See how the tutor corrects mistakes, not just how they read
  • Ask direct questions about curriculum, pacing, and homework expectations
  • Experience the platform (Zoom, Teams, or otherwise) firsthand, including audio/video quality

If an academy's "free trial" turns out to be a pre-recorded demo or a generic sales call with no actual teaching, that tells you something about how seriously they treat the relationship.

4. Ask How Progress Is Actually Tracked

For Hifz (memorization) specifically, ask about the revision system being used. A well-structured Hifz program should follow some version of the classical three-part cycle: new memorization (sabaq), recent review (sabaqi), and long-term revision of older portions (manzil). Without a deliberate revision system, students often memorize quickly and forget just as quickly — progress that looks fast in month one but doesn't hold up by month six.

For Tajweed and general recitation, ask whether you'll receive regular progress reports, or whether progress is tracked informally and only reported if you ask.

5. Teacher Gender Options

Many families — not all, but many — prefer female tutors for daughters and younger children, and male tutors for sons, particularly as children get older. This is a completely reasonable preference to have, and a well-run academy should be able to accommodate it without friction. If an academy can't tell you clearly whether female tutors are available, that's worth noting before you enroll, not after.

6. Transparent Pricing

Look for a clear, published price per plan — number of classes per week, session length, and monthly cost stated plainly, not "contact us for pricing" as the only option. Also ask directly: is there a long-term contract, or can you cancel or pause month to month? Academies that hide pricing until after a sales call are usually doing so because the real price is higher than what gets advertised elsewhere.

7. Safety and Privacy for Online Classes

For any online class involving children, ask plainly: is this strictly one-on-one, or could my child be in a shared call with other students? Is the platform something you recognize and trust (Zoom, Microsoft Teams), or a lesser-known tool? Reasonable safety questions are not excessive — they are exactly what a responsible academy should expect and answer clearly.

8. Time Zone and Scheduling Flexibility

If you're outside the tutor's home country, confirm — don't assume — that scheduling genuinely works around your time zone rather than forcing you into inconvenient hours. Ask what happens if you need to reschedule a class: is there a grace period, or are missed classes simply lost?

A Quick Checklist Before You Enroll Anywhere

  • What specific credential does the tutor hold, and who granted it?
  • Is this one-on-one or group, and what is the actual price difference?
  • What exactly happens during the free trial class?
  • For Hifz specifically: what is the revision system?
  • Are male and female tutors both available?
  • Is pricing published clearly, with no long-term contract required?
  • Is the platform one-on-one and privacy-respecting for children?
  • Will scheduling genuinely work around your time zone?

These are the same questions we'd want you to ask us. Our tutors are Dars-e-Nizami-graduate Aalims holding Ijazah with an unbroken chain of authority, classes are strictly one-on-one, pricing is published on our pricing page with no long-term contract, and both male and female tutors are available. If you'd like to see it for yourself, a free trial class costs nothing and commits you to nothing.
